The 10 night economy pack is much better value for a little extra money. The cost difference for 7 vs 10 nights is usually only £100-150 p/p, and you have three more nights of accommodation and spiritual opportunity. That works out to £30-50 a night or so, an absolute bargain for those who go off on pilgrimage time. At ten nights, you get to spend FIVE in each holy city (instead of running around making 3-4 night splits) and be fully rooted in the unique spiritual vibe of that location. You can get established for two Friday prayers in each city, witness to all Ziyarah but without any haste; perform some Tawaf and voluntary Salah while the atmosphere is free of rush and not crowded; have adequate time of rest between Ibadahs without being tired. And with the weather so nice, you will make good use of your extended trip in December finding little reason to stay home. It's a time when many pilgrims say those extra days change their journey from tourist-like rushing to the true spiritual immersion they had hoped for.
Then five are spent in each holy city, and that constitutes an excellent balance in terms of extended concentration. In Madinah, you're at Miraj Al Salam or similar accommodations (including New Madinah Hotel and Taiba Front Hotel), typically situated 600-800 meters from Masjid al-Nabawi. Those hotels offer comfortable stay experience that includes basic facilities, friendly staff and proximity to Prophet's Mosque. It's also important to note that cheaper hotels are smaller and you won't get much of facilities compared with 4-5 stars, but they will be ultra clean, provide good service and all the basic comfort a pilgrim might require. And the 10-night length means you don't just visit these lodges — you live in them.
So what are the best reasons for visiting in December, perfect for a long budget stay that is comfortable and affordable? It's one of the cheapest months to perform Umrah because it is not inside high seasons, such as Ramadan and Hajj flights being around 30-40% cheaper than in summer or Ramadan time. This reduces hotel industry prices, with agencies then able to sell competitive 10-night packages at a cost in line with seven-night high-season rates. The mild winter means that outdoor worship can be extended without the stifling summer temperatures: it is around 15-20°C during December, although the heat can exceed 45° during the summer and this season also coincides with Christmas holidays in the UK when many schools are closed and businesses run at half capacity making it easier to take ten days off. Alternatively, economy hotels are close to the local eateries and shops where meals can be bought cheaper than through a trek operator, on average £5-8 per meal. Ziyarah Tours: A full Ziyarah tour can be added to the above for around £40-60 per person (ALL sites in both cities) or as individual places you wish to visit thus allowing for budget considerations. Others opt for Ziyarah group tours which are cheaper than private and still offer professional guidance. You can also visit places of interest on your own by public transportation or shared taxis, which greatly reduces costs if you are comfortable leading the tours. The 10 nights economy is often superior value to shorter premium packages as you'll discover. The rooms in 3 star properties are smaller and come with less gadgets and other extras as compared to 4 star properties, however the facilities would do except that you will be spending majority of your time in Masjids not hotels.
